OEM Versus Aftermarket

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacture. Strictly speaking, OEM refers to the manufacture of any device that is designed and built to be distributed under the label of another company, i.e. Motorola etc. You know when you see an item labeled for instance, "OEM Motorola Car Charger," that it is an original item built for Motorola. These items will generally carry a higher price tag.

Aftermarket, Non-OEM, or items without an OEM designation are aftermarket items made by companies not affiliated with Original Equipment Manufacturers. These items are built to factory specifications with the same degree of quality; they just do not carry the brand name as they are not produced by an Original Equipment Manufacturer. These "generic" items cost less for this reason (much like a good store brand at a supermarket), and offer good value if a brand name is not essential for the consumer.
